Job Profile
We are looking for an experienced Senior UPS Service Engineer with strong hands-on expertise in Industrial UPS systems, capable of independently handling troubleshooting, technical support, escalated service calls, failure analysis, and training of field engineers. The role also covers site load studies, pre-installation inspections, and engineering documentation for technical proposals, serving as a technical link between Sales, Engineering, and Production. Responsibilities also include auditing UPS testing processes, verifying completed tests, and conducting pre-dispatch Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT).
A key requirement of this role is the ability to remotely diagnose technical problems through field engineers who may have only basic technical knowledge and guide them systematically towards fault identification and resolution.
Engineering documentation like GA and SLD needed for technical proposal, user manual, operating manual, service and troubleshooting manuals. Use CAD or equivalent engineering drawing tools to prepare and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical drawings, and incorporate clear illustrations and instructions into manuals.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently troubleshoot, diagnose, service, and resolve technical issues in Industrial Online UPS systems.
- Apply strong knowledge of UPS technology, system architecture, operating principles, technical terminology, power electronics, and fault diagnostics.
- Understand the technical limitations and skill level of the field engineer at site and adapt remote troubleshooting instructions accordingly.
- Diagnose problems remotely by asking systematic, stage-by-stage questions, interpreting field observations and feedback, and progressively narrowing down the possible cause of failure.
- Visualize the system condition remotely, identify what needs to be checked next, and guide the field engineer step-by-step through measurements, observations, checks, and corrective actions until the fault is identified and resolved.
- Translate complex technical troubleshooting into simple, clear, and practical instructions that engineers with basic technical knowledge can understand and execute.
Key Responsibilities Continued
- Handle escalated service calls and visit customer sites whenever remote troubleshooting is insufficient or senior-level intervention is required.
- Train and mentor field service engineers to improve their troubleshooting capability, technical knowledge, and ability to independently handle service calls.
- Conduct technical and service training for OEM engineers at our facility or at OEM/customer locations.
- Promptly attend critical or escalated service issues at OEM/customer sites whenever required.
- Carry out detailed failure analysis and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for recurring or critical failures and recommend appropriate corrective and preventive actions.
- Compile weekly service and failure-analysis reports and discuss recurring failures, observations, root causes, and corrective actions with the Engineering Team.
- Prepare, draft, update, and maintain user manuals, operating manuals, service manuals, training manuals, troubleshooting procedures, and technical documentation.
- Use CAD or equivalent engineering drawing tools to prepare and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical drawings, and incorporate clear illustrations and instructions into manuals.
- Coordinate closely with the Engineering Team for technical escalations, product-related observations, field feedback, and corrective actions.
Key Skills Required
- Strong independent fault-diagnosis and problem-solving capability in Industrial UPS systems.
- Excellent remote diagnostic skills: ability to work with limited field information, ask the right sequence of questions, visualize site conditions, and guide engineers with basic technical knowledge through structured troubleshooting.
- Strong understanding of UPS power electronics, rectifiers, inverters, static bypass, batteries, control systems, and associated electrical systems.
- Strong failure-analysis and Root Cause Analysis skills.
- Excellent communication, mentoring, and technical training skills.
- Proven experience in preparing user, operating, service, and training manuals; strong technical writing, drafting, and documentation skills, with practical knowledge of CAD-based schematics and drawings.
- Fluency in Hindi is mandatory; good working communication in English is required.
- Willingness to travel to customer and OEM sites for escalated service requirements.
Preferred Candidate: A technically strong Industrial UPS professional who combines independent and remote troubleshooting with engineer training, documentation, site assessment, testing audits, FAT, and coordination between Sales, Engineering, and Production.
Site Assessment and Proposal Engineering
Alongside service and manual preparation, the engineer will translate customer requirements and site findings into clear technical inputs for proposals, customization, and production.
- Conduct customer-site load studies and load profiling using a power analyzer or appropriate instruments. Assess operating loads, starting and recurring peaks, power factor, harmonics, and regenerative behaviour where relevant; compile observations and measurement reports.
- Review customer requirements and load-study findings with the Engineering Team to identify the appropriate UPS configuration and required customization, and provide documented technical recommendations.
- Carry out pre-installation site inspections for higher-capacity UPS systems. Review equipment placement, access and clearances, ventilation, input and output power arrangements, cable routing, earthing, battery arrangements, and installation readiness; document requirements and gaps.
- Prepare or coordinate the preparation of engineering documents needed for technical proposals and installation guidance, including input and output wiring diagrams, General Arrangement (GA) drawings, Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), connection details, and relevant technical drawings.
- Provide clear technical briefs, basic design inputs, and drawing guidelines to drafting or documentation personnel. When workload requires delegation, arrange preparation by appropriate personnel and review the outputs for accuracy, completeness, and consistency with Engineering Team requirements.
- Provide the technical drawings, specifications, site findings, customization notes, and engineering inputs needed to present professional customer proposals and technical presentations.
- Act as the technical link between Sales and Production, coordinating with the Engineering Team to communicate customer requirements, clarify technical scope, and ensure agreed configurations and customization requirements are understood before production and installation.
Additional Skills Required
- Practical knowledge of load studies, load profiling, power-analyzer measurements, and interpretation of site data.
- Ability to assess installation readiness for higher-capacity UPS systems and document clear site requirements.
- Ability to prepare, interpret, or supervise GA drawings, SLDs, input and output wiring diagrams, and proposal-related engineering documentation.
- Strong coordination skills to convert customer requirements into clear, actionable inputs for Sales, Engineering, drafting personnel, and Production.
Testing Audits and Factory Acceptance Tests
The engineer will take responsibility for reviewing testing effectiveness, identifying missed checks, and verifying UPS performance before dispatch in coordination with the Testing, Quality Control, and Engineering teams.
- Periodically audit UPS testing procedures, test methods, checklists, records, and actual testing processes to verify that required checks are performed correctly and consistently.
- Randomly select UPS units that have already completed testing and independently retest all applicable parameters against approved specifications and test procedures. Identify omitted tests, missed parameters, recording gaps, and discrepancies in results.
- Take responsibility for pre-dispatch Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), including retesting all applicable parameters, verifying customer-specific configurations and customization, and documenting acceptance results against approved specifications.
- Ensure test deviations and non-conformities identified during random retesting or FAT are recorded, corrected, and successfully retested before dispatch clearance.
- Review engineering failure-analysis and Root Cause Analysis reports to identify failures that existing production tests did not detect, and determine where testing coverage, methods, or execution need improvement.
- Work with the Engineering and Testing teams to add or revise testing procedures, test methods, checklist items, and individual test steps where failure-analysis findings reveal gaps. Verify that revised checks are implemented and recorded.
- Identify areas where Quality Control needs strengthening, recommend additional inspection points and verification checks, and coordinate corrective and preventive actions with the Quality Control and Engineering teams.
- Maintain audit, random-retest, and FAT records, and include recurring testing gaps, corrective actions, and implementation status in weekly reports and Engineering Team reviews.
Testing Competencies Required
- Hands-on knowledge of Industrial UPS testing, performance verification, and Factory Acceptance Tests.
- Ability to audit testing processes, independently retest completed units, and identify missed parameters or inadequate test coverage.
- Ability to translate field failures and engineering analysis into practical improvements to testing procedures and Quality Control checks.
